Your role

Job description:

WSP is currently seeking a dynamic and innovative Co-op student or structural intern to join their Structural Engineering Group, located in their Winnipeg office. This position will have the opportunity of working with a multi-disciplinary team to develop creative design solutions at various stages in a project and thrive in a dynamic and proactive learning environment. 

What you can expect to do here:

  • Perform calculations and assessments for various structures, under the supervision of a Senior Engineer.
  • Perform such calculations using current design software and advanced finite element modelling underpinned by a sound understanding of basic principles.
  • Be curious to explore and help advance the concepts of design automation.
  • Respond to client requests as needed to help further their business.
  • Write technical reports when required.
  • Assist in the coordination of project documentation under the supervision of the project manager.
  • Contribute to the preparation of detailed drawings, sections and standard details, and ensure quality adherence.
  • Review contract documents, and shop drawings and respond to contractor inquiries.
  • Conduct field reviews and condition assessments.
  • High focus on the ability to develop creative solutions in complex environments in response to unexpected site and project challenges at short notice and in collaboration with the project team.
  • Occasional travel for site assessments and site support.

Training & development

During the internship, developed skills in advanced design software, finite element modelling, and creative problem-solving in complex environments, while gaining experience in technical report writing, project documentation, and client interaction.

  • Developing knowledge of the National Building Code, as well as other applicable codes and standards. 
  • Strong load path understanding.
  • Strength in any of the following software – ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, RAM and/or Robot.
