Your role

Summary:

This Defense Microelectronics internship opportunity is hosted by their Manufacturing & Operations (Foundry) Branch. The selected candidate will develop foundational skills and support semiconductor fabrication, utilize foundry systems and tools, perform wet etch, clean and strip operations, assist with experiments and more!

Duties:

As a Student Trainee (Electronics Engineer) at the NH-0899-1, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Receives formal and on-the-job instruction and training designed to provide familiarization with the functions and operations of semiconductor device fabrication inside a cleanroom environment.
  • Conducts engineering experiments and performs data analysis to increase knowledge and/or to achieve process improvement of the Wet Etch functional area under the guidance of the lead engineer or supervisor.
  • Assists lead engineers by performing any or all of the following tasks in the Wet Etch functional area: conducts wet etch experiments, records data, performs wet etch and clean operations, performs research for technical analysis; performs qualification checks and operations on tools for semiconductor fabrication; creates and reviews technical documentations for approval; develop, implement, and monitor quality evaluation capabilities for tool calibrations.
  • Utilizes various forms of computer hardware and software to accomplish tasks including computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, database management and other approaches to document engineering evaluations and recommendations.

Training & development

As an intern, you will receive formal and on-the-job training in semiconductor device fabrication within a cleanroom environment. You will assist in conducting engineering experiments and data analysis under the guidance of lead engineers, while also helping with wet etch experiments, tool operations, technical documentation, and quality evaluations using computer applications for documentation and analysis.

Qualifications:

To be considered for a Postsecondary appointment you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be currently enrolled in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET, be in good academic standing, be in a full-time program at an institution of higher education; AND is making satisfactory progress toward receipt of a baccalaureate or graduate degree; AND has completed at least one year of the program.
  • Undergraduate or graduate programs must be led toward an appropriate scientific field (engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology). Proof of enrollment is required with your application package.
  • Making satisfactory progress toward receipt of a baccalaureate or graduate degree in an Engineering program OR appropriate scientific field.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 2.0 and must take a full-time course load as defined by your academic institution.
  • Must remain in good academic standing with academic institutions and continue to be enrolled in college/university throughout the internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
  • Must submit current and future transcripts as proof of enrollment.
  • Must sign a written participant agreement that identifies expectations, including but not limited to a general description of duties, work schedules; expected date of completion of academic and program requirements; mentorship opportunities; training requirements, as applicable; evaluation procedures that will be used for the participant; and requirements for continuation and successful completion of the program.

Education:

You must provide transcripts to support your educational claims by the closing date of this announcement. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable at the time of application.

Undergraduate Education:

Completed a minimum of 1 year of education (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours leading to a degree. The degree is credited based on its relationship to 120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours. For example, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Security Requirements: Must obtain/maintain Non-Critical Sensitive (Secret) security clearance.
  • The appointment is subject to the completion of a favourable suitability or fitness determination, where reciprocity cannot be applied; unfavourably adjudicated background checks will be grounds for removal.

Telework Eligibility:

  • This position is not telework-eligible but may be approved for emergency situational or ad-hoc telework only.

Selective Service Requirement:

  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
  • Transcript(s) must include student name, academic institution, major, earned credit hours, and cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
  • Tour of duty to others.
  • Must be enrolled in a full-time program at college/university throughout the internship as a degree-seeking student.
  • This is a drug testing position.
  • Must reside within 75 miles of the local commuting area.
