Your role

Duration and Working Arrangement:

The duration of the internship is three (3) months with a possibility of extension to six (6) months. This internship is UNPAID, in person, and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premise working arrangement from (New York, USA). This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. This internship is in the South and Southeast Asia Team, Asia and the Pacific Division, DPPA-DPO at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Responsibilities of this internship include, but are not limited to:

  • Research on South and Southeast Asia peace and security issues.
  • Media monitoring and analysis of current events.
  • Drafting thematic papers, background documents, pieces of correspondence, etc.
  • Attending and taking notes at conferences and meetings.
  • Assistance in the organization of meetings.
  • Assistance in data collection and information management.
  • Assistance with project management.

Teamwork:

  • Solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.
  • Places team agenda before personal agenda.
  • Supports and acts by final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position.
  • Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Duration: 3-6 months. The desired start date is 1 August 2024, or sooner.

Qualifications/Special Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Intern Specific text:

The United Nations does not financially remunerate interns. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.

During the internship, interns can learn to conduct in-depth research on South and Southeast Asia peace and security issues, draft comprehensive thematic papers, and manage information effectively. As an intern, you'll also develop teamwork skills by collaborating with colleagues, valuing diverse inputs, and supporting group decisions to achieve organizational goals.
