Your role

Internships can be in-person, fully remote, or in-person for a limited period in combination with remote work, and can therefore take place from any timezone. Successful applicants may include management from regional offices depending on the candidate's location. All modalities provide a safe, professional, inclusive and respectful environment for the colleagues we work with.

The DCO internship programme runs on a 12-month planning horizon, meaning the internship may begin no sooner than 2 months from your application and may start within 12 months of the application. Typically, two larger cohorts of interns are onboarded to work in the following periods

  • March - September
  • September - March

Duties and Responsibilities:

Track 1 and 2: Coordination and Executive Support:

  • Collate guidance materials on knowledge capture and sharing.
  • Assist in collecting and sharing emerging good practices and lessons for DCO and UNSDG members.
  • Facilitate various online communities of practice.
  • Support the preparation of senior-level management meetings, conferences, and retreats.
  • Aid in the preparation of country-level meetings organized globally.
  • Assist in creating slide decks, background papers, and option papers for meetings.
  • Track and analyze UNSDG decisions and their implementation.
  • Ensure consistent use of visual concepts and language.
  • Assist in preparing speeches and talking points.

Track 1: Strategic Planning, Data & Analytics:

  • Support analytics on issues related to DCO/UNSDG, encompassing cross-cutting needs, priorities, resources, risks, and performance.
  • Assist in developing corporate visualization solutions from multiple data sources using state-of-the-art tools for insightful decision-making.
  • Support the development of data models, including performance measures, for scorecard analysis.
  • Build interactive dashboards and reports utilizing corporate analytics applications.
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results.
  • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau, or similar self-service analytics tools.
  • Utilize relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases.
  • Support geospatial analysis and geographic information systems (GIS) such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet, Carto, or Open Street Map.
  • Apply analytical techniques like sentiment analysis, predictive analysis, or social media monitoring.
  • Support the analytics teams in maintaining key data sets, data models, indices and reports •Support the preparation of analytical slide decks for policymakers

Track 2: Policy Analysis & Programme Facilitation:

  • Monitor, identify, and analyze global trends in geography, politics, and themes across all units of the Policy and Programme branch (e.g., human rights, gender equality, climate and environment, inter-agency programming, and partnerships).
  • Support the preparation of analytical reports, papers, talking points, and correspondences.
  • Assist in coordinating the formulation of strategies, programs, and policies.
  • Support all areas of the policy process: identification and agenda building, policy development, formulation and adoptions, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Support knowledge management of policy and program data/information, including community facilitation, good practice capture, knowledge dissemination, and platform management.
  • Support market intelligence around knowledge management and organizational learning.
  • Assist in the preparation of meetings, events, talks, and visits.

Salary & benefits

The internship is unpaid and full‐time. The unpaid internship is designed to be in person and full-time at the New York duty station. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also offer a flexible work arrangement to be conducted hybrid (in-person and remote), and part-time.

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in information management, document management, digital archiving or a related field of study.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
