About the team and role:

Two (2) internship positions are located in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. The internship is within the Information Services Section (ISS) of the Information Management Branch (IMB) working in the Corporate Solutions Team. 

The daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, duties may include but are not limited to lending support to the projects and activities. They are seeking two motivated and passionate interns to join their team to either (a) explore the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and humanitarian policy. The intern will work to conduct research, analyze data, and contribute to the development of strategies aimed at understanding and addressing the implications of AI on humanitarian efforts; or (b) support IM projects and activities related to the citizen development initiative at OCHA. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Researches, compiles, analyses, summarizes, and presents basic information/data on a wide range of programs/projects and related topics, highlighting noteworthy issues/trends for consideration by appropriate parties. 
  • Explore relevant literature, academic papers, and industry reports. 
  • Assists with the preparation of data sets, extracts data features from complex datasets, and responds to queries for AI-related analysis. 
  • Assist in drafting project-related documentation. 
  • Assist in defining, planning, and organizing citizen developer community. Assist in preparing for Quarterly Community meetings, online webinars, technical meetups, demos, and training;  
  • Draft application manuals, perform application testing and minor technical development 
  • Assist in administration related to Power Platform.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

About you

Qualifications/special skills:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements;

  • (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Program or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Masters, or PH.D. Program. 
  • Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.
  • Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Languages:

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
