About the programme:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environment sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UN Environment Programme/New York Office is responsible for strategic linkages with the UN system, key partners, and stakeholders in the context of the interagency and intergovernmental processes based on UN Headquarters.

The internship is for six (6) months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer of the UNEP New York Office, the intern will:

  • Attend and summarize key discussions at meetings at UN Headquarters, including meetings organized by the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Security Council, and UN Missions in New York.
  • Research and summarize key developments related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and UN system reform, including coverage of discussions in relevant intergovernmental fora.
  • Assist the work of the UNEP/New York Office to support Member States in intergovernmental negotiations related to the environment.
  • Assist with logistics and organization of UNEP events and side events for the General Assembly, follow up on Agenda 2030, and other environment-related events at UN Headquarters in New York.

Duration: Six months.

About you

Qualifications/Special Skills:

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); preferably enrolled in an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) with a focus on environmental sciences, natural resource management, communication, or international relations.
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD. Programme.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.

Intern Specific text:

The United Nations does not financially remunerate interns. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
