Your role

In line with the approved UN Women Security and Safety Services Biannual Work Plan (BWP) and under the guidance of the Regional Security Specialist for the Americas and the Caribbean, the Security and Safety Communications Intern will support the coordination and development of outputs, whilst also scoping internal UN Women program delivery security requirements. Interns will support security information and coordination requirements and explore how external interactions will benefit gender-specific security and safety communication strategies. This internship is for 6 months.

The Intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Support the coordination of the wider UN Security Management System (UNSMS) as an integral member of UN Women Security and Safety Services. The focus of this will be on facilitating the identification, development, and delivery of specific gender-orientated security information and coordination platforms.  
  • Liaise with appropriate units, divisions, and sections internally, utilizing all available mediums;
  • Liaise with the UN Department of Safety and Security and UNSMS partners specializing in security information;
  • Support the development of gender-orientated security information, coordination, and communication materials;
  • Support the development of communication campaigns, establishing cohesive and coordinated channels of communication to reach and influence key audiences;
  • Create PowerPoint Presentations;
  • Create communication products (flyers, presentations, graphics, videos, multimedia materials);
  • Actively participate in the UNSMS Strategic Communications Working Group on behalf of UN Women;
  • Liaise with appropriate external bodies;
  • Liaise with all interested parties with regard to identified educational materials.

About you

Applicants should meet the following academic requirements:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: security risk management, criminal justice systems, security information management, international relations media/communications, or other relevant subjects are required.
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
    • Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
    • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in the first two requirements above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two years of graduation.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Benefits

Interns who do not receive financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
