Your role

Is this you?

  • Mentally and physically tough
  • Quick thinking
  • Adaptable
  • Resourceful
  • Able to keep a cool head in high-pressure situations
  • Able to work effectively with people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • A team player
  • A leader

If the answer is 'yes', you could be suited to one of the Army's most demanding roles. That of Commando.

Intensive training will equip you with the mental and physical resources to operate in a variety of challenging operational settings.

You will be trained for tasks distinct to Commando units, which may include precision strike and direct action missions, reconnaissance and special recovery operations. You'll also support ADF domestic activities, with the potential to deploy overseas for exercises and or on operations.

You will learn to use specialist weapons, equipment and tactics, and develop adrenaline-pumping skills in driving, parachuting, roping, helicopter extraction, demolition and heavy weapons. You'll acquire advanced survival skills and the ability to carry out high-risk missions, which could be anywhere in the world.

As a Commando, you’ll also be trained to:

  • employ a range of advanced small arms and heavy weapon systems
  • fight at close quarters
  • conduct urban and rural operations
  • destroy targets using explosives
  • parachute onto land or into water
  • operate standard military and special operations vehicles
  • operate standard military and special operations water-craft
  • ascend and descend vertical obstacles using military roping techniques
  • operate advanced communications equipment
  • conduct airborne rappelling and fast roping, and
  • conduct close protection to high ranking military and government ministers in war-like situations.

Being a Commando is no ordinary career. It will challenge you to perform at a level past anything you will have encountered in your civilian life.

Physical Requirements

You will be required to successfully pass a Special Forces Pre-Fitness Assessment (PFA) before enlistment. This PFA requires you to achieve a higher standard than the general entry fitness level for the Army. As a minimum, you must be able to complete:

  • Beep test (shuttle run) to level 10.1
  • 40 push ups
  • 60 sit ups
  • 6 chin-ups (heaves)

Chin-ups – candidates are required to conduct chin-ups with a pronated (overhand) grip.

Note: Entry into this program is merit based. Candidates will be provided with the opportunity to demonstrate their maximum effort during testing and ranked accordingly.

Swimming – Commandos are required to operate in maritime environments and must be proficient swimmers. Candidates will be required to complete a swim test prior to attempting the Commando Selection Course (after Infantry Initial Employment Training). Candidates are recommended to become proficient in breaststroke, freestyle and side-stroke before attending Recruit Training.

Additional information on physical requirements can be accessed on the SOFIT App, available on Android and iOS.
