This is an exciting opportunity to use your technical knowledge and build a career in a very specialised and unique sector.

You will get exposure to all facets of construction including renewable energy, industrial, commercial, residential, civil infrastructure, manufacturing, marine and many others. At the same time you get an insight to the finance and insurance industry and ultimately develop into a construction underwriter.

A career as a construction underwriter can take you anywhere and everywhere.

What is construction underwriting?

A construction underwriter is required to review and assess the technical details of a construction project and offer/negotiate the price of insurance and the clauses of the policy. Typically, this involves negotiations and discussions with an insurance broker.

An example of what you may need to consider for a prospective project is:

  • What are the construction materials?
  • What is the scope of works?
  • How is it being built?
  • Can the works and final structure withstand any likely flood or storm events?
  • Is the construction method appropriate or risky?
  • What kind of testing and commissioning is being performed?
  • Does the scheduling/timing of works increase or reduce exposures?
  • What type of insurance cover and limits are being requested?

There are important administrative and compliance requirements that need to be strictly followed for each project.
